Pahto at Takhlakh Lake
In the Cascade mountains of Washington state there is a small window in the late fall where the forest roads are still open but fresh snow on all the trees. It's usually measured in days because once the snow gets too deep those roads close for the winter and/or become impassible except for snowmobiles and snowshoes. In this shot taken in November not only do we have fresh snow but thick ice on Takhlakh Lake that created some great patterns. Pahto, aka Klickitat, aka Mt Adams is to the left reaching 12,281 feet above sea level with over 8,100 feet of prominence. The mountain's snow melt and glaciers flow to the Columbia River via the Klickitat, White Salmon, Lewis, and Cispus Rivers providing cold, clear water for the many species of Trout, Salmon, Steelhead and other fish in these rivers. The clouds provided some really nice contrast with sun rays breaking through. Wy'east, aka Mt Hood is over 60 miles away but can be seen just above the horizon to the right.
